I need sports help!

Okay, so here's the deal, it is not going over too well this whole "not into sports" thing in my new job, so I need to take on a new hobby here with my abundance of free time with no friends, no church and basically no life yet here in Dallas.  I need sports teams and I am not just talking about for one sport.  I think I need one for every sport.  Okay, maybe I can get away without a Lacrosse team, or rugby team, but other then that for all sports that are "American Past Times" I need to just choose a team and start keeping up with what's going on with them.  Sign up for a couple RSS feeds, etc.  Something, cause it is a daily issue around here.

This is where the fun comes in for all of you, this is the crowd participation part of the blog.  I need your recommendations for each sport.  Which team you think I should choose and whoever has the most overall votes will win.  Now keep in mind, these have to make sense for me, it has to be a team that I could legitimately like.  For example, don't recommend all TX teams, as that is to generic for me to do...same would be true for suggestions for all TN teams.  I am a person who likes things that are not the norm for everyone else (aka gnomes). When  I was younger I chose my favorite baseball team to be the Toronto Blue Jays because I liked Canada and their pennant was pretty.

So here is what I think that I need, being the sports enthusiast that I am, if I have missed something you can kindly recommend.  I am going to try to take this on to a reasonable level at first.  I will add tier two in later if I am able to handle this amount of sports.

College - Basketball, Football
Pro - Baseball, Football, Basketball
Hockey (only if TX has a hockey team - does anyone know?)

Alright, so there is your task.....I am ready for your feedback.  The game begins NOW.

We have a hockey team, they are the Dallas Stars, and they won the Stanley Cup back in 2000. The main player for the stars is Mike Modano, Brenden Morrow, Sergei Zubov, and of course the goalie Marty Turco. (I am a huge hockey fan)

As far as your College levels here are my votes: Texas Longhorn (I have to be for the longhorns they are amazing)
Basketball: Lousiville, I like them because I love the name.

Pro:
Football: Cowboys
Basketball: Mevericks
Baseball: Rangers

Sorry, I am all about Texas teams they are just the best.

Anyway if you ever get bored on the weekends and want someone to take you around town let me know I would love to take you out and about town.

Okay girl, I do love sports so I will give you some teams to follow!

Pro football: I think the Cowboys could be a good choice for you... I know it is the local team BUT they are a pretty popular team everywhere, and they have a cute young quarterback who is currently dating Jessica Simpson so there you have a crossover into pop culture too. And they are a pretty good team this year so it wouldn't be like you had to root for someone terrible.

College football: In your current location, I'd say stick with something from the big 12 conference, which is basically all the midwest states - Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, etc. As a die-hard OU (Oklahoma) fan I cannot in good conscience tell you to root for the Longhorns, although they are the team to room for in Texas. You could try a more mid-level big 12 team, like Kansas State or Missouri. They usually make it interesting at least. If you're looking for an underdog, go with Baylor... bless their hearts...

Pro basketball: Ugh, don't bother.

College basketball: I am pretty disinterested in basketball in general, but you could pick a solid midwest team like Kansas.

Baseball: Baseball is my favorite sport so I'm going to be biased and tell you to root for the Cardinals. They have great fans (yours truly included) all over the country and a nice team legacy, plus some really great players. Plus you get to root against the Cubs, which is awesome and so easy to do. Just don't pick the Yankees or the Red Sox, ugh.

I hope that helps! Also we love and miss you sooooo much!

I have to agree with much of Amy's comments. Pro Basketball --YUCK!! But I would add that same comment to Baseball -- too boring for me.

College football -- putting aside my WI roots and the obvious WI Badgers --I like the Oregon Ducks. Why -- I like that the team's name is the ducks and it has a contract with Nike, I think, that gives them tons of clothing options so I never know which uniform they will be wearing and it always the latest football fashion. Plus they play well.

College Hoops -- KState. Solid team, midwest and my nephew (Sven's son Steven) attends. PLUS it is known as "the Little Apple" because it is located in Manhatten KS.

College hockey -- have to go local -- Badgers get lots of recruits from Canada and many go pro! We also have some of the best cheers/heckles. Other college teams would be Boston College and Colorado College -- both play well and usually end up high in the rankings.

Pro hockey -- any team with their mascot being a penguin -- too cool of a bird!

pro football Green Bay -- we have the new QB and anyone putting up with Farve frenzy is good.

Good Luck! Meg sends a hug and Sean extends a TX Howdy from his state of origin.

Well, here comes a comment from the older generation.

We think that it would be a good thing for you to consider becoming interested in the California Angels Baseball team! In doing so, you would be in good company with many relatives, both at home and abroad. Not only that, but you would be revisiting your roots from a former time in your life.

Grandma and I have become active Angel fans. Grandma even takes it upon herself, from time to time, to chide our manager, Mike Scocsia regarding when it would be a good time to change pitchers, etc. Wha's amazing is, that he often seems to do what she says. And, we are only watching on TV!

So, there you have our recommendation.

Thanks for putting up the pics of your place. We love to know what's going on in our grandkids lives.

We love you, and pray for you often.

Time for Auntie Shari to chime in on the sports issues.

First, and most obvious, baseball is LA Angels, all the way. As Grandpa noted, it's in your roots... on both sides. Remember, your Grandma Sharon was an Angel fan, too. Here are some additional reasons to make them 'your' team.
1) you can keep following them even after next week because they are in the playoffs so you can keep learning now instead of having to wait until 2009,
2) they play a significant number of games in Texas (against the Rangers) because they are in the same division, so you can attend or talk about games (next year... Texas is no less than 22 games BEHIND the Angels) and cheer for the Angels, which will keep you in exciting conversations with your coworkers,
3) you can call any of your many Angel-fan family members to get current information about the Angels to have readily available for your conversations,
4) the now-famous icon, the Rally Monkey (even included in beer commercials) is an Angel original (and your cousin Joel was at the game where the Rally Monkey was first introduced),
5) you have family-related trivia you can share about the Angels which will give you something sports-related to contribute even if you haven't yet gotten 'into' the game itself. Here's some sample true trivia... a) your cousins, Gabe, Titus, Elizabeth, and Josh have been to every Angels opening day all their lives, b) your Uncle Dave got Nolan Ryan's autograph in person when he was a kid (hall of famer Nolan Ryan's main 2 teams were the Angels and the Texas Rangers), c) your Uncle Dave proposed to his wife by writing "Will you marry me?" on a foul ball and presenting it to her at an Angels farm league game... she said yes, d) besides those living in Southern California, you have family all over the world who are avid Angel fans... Cousin Joel in Florida, Cousin Sharelle in Sweden, and Aunt Shari in Indonesia, d) the Angels were your own first exposure to pro baseball, e) when your brother, Jeremy, was little, he watched the Angel games and told me he knew what he wanted to be when he grew up... a baseball groundskeeper, f) your Uncle's family regularly attends Angels Spring Training in Arizona.

I think that about covers it. I have no opinions about your other team choices, but I would recommend you choose at least one Texas team... Longhorns sound best and not the Rangers (who have had a winning record only once in this millenium).

Thanks for letting us make suggestions, and for your great blog site.

Love you,
Your Aunt Shari

As you may recall, I am also a Gilmore Girls fan. I was thinking that your blogsite had something to do with that so I'm glad to see I was right. Love it!

Shari says I have to tell you to root for the Angels. I suppose the Swedish ladies soccer team from Bälinge isn't an option? Then Angels is the vote from the 6 Sanglof's.

Hey Ok here is the deal.
Picking a sports team is a very big deal, im glade you feel you are ready for this big decision. You cant just pick a team because every one else is. Thats WEEK! I will share from my experiances in helping people choose. So Titus turned thirteen and had never made a chose of a football team yet i told him he is a man now and its time to act like it. So he didnt want to jump on any banwagon like everyone else. He chose the Browns! they are basically crap. But i encouraged him and made him a history book on them and bought him his first pro jersey!

You cant just pick a team out of the blue, really think about it.
Do you like there name?
Do you have chances to see there games?
Do you like how they play... Each team has there own style!
Or even do you look good in their colors!

So keep that in mind.
For Me...

pro football: Seattle Seahawks!
Reason: My favorite city. They play west cost offense.(they throw alot). They are the most aggresive team in football. And they have the 12th man! thats the best part they say that seahawks stadium is the lodest in the nation the fans are crazy thiere and thier are 11 players on the field but they say that the fans are so loud in seattle that it feels like there is an extra player hence... the 12th man.

Pro Baseball: Angels... No doubt
Reason: We got history, i have been a fan my whole life threw the good and the bad i could never let them go. To many memories. There is more commitment to the angels from me than sleep its self! Plus I get to go to as amny games as possible. And now that they are the best team in baseball i can talk crap on everyone else.

Pro Basketball: Goldenstate(oakland) Warriors
Reason: I like how they play, they are the fastest in the game full speed 100% of the time. They arnt the best but at least they own the Lackers whom i hate!

Pro Hockey: Anahiem DUCKS!
Reason: Well first that guy who likes the stars is lame everyone hates Dallas in hockey you might as well pick a candian team if you go with them. Dallas is as i like to say Boo-Boo. They won in 2000 but the ducks got it in 2007 thats right!

Well i got plenty more but those are the standard so hope it helps!
